Digital Bridge: AI reality check -- Global privacy battle -- Mission 'Critical' – POLITICO
I'm Mark Scott, POLITICO's chief technology correspondent, and after a week of vacation, I'm honestly struggling to get myself up and running this week. With that in mind, here's the pep song that has been keeping me going as I've written this week's newsletter. Warning: it'll get stuck in your mind. We'll tell you where to look for it. HERE'S MY PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WEEK: let's cool the hype around OpenAI, Google's Bard and the sudden tsunami of so-called generative artificial intelligence use cases that have just popped up (looking at you, Pope in a puffer coat.)

Challenges With AI: Artistry, Copyrights and Fake News
The recent surge in interest in new AI applications in 2023 has been nothing short of extraordinary. From ChatGPT to a growing list of other new apps, our technology and business worlds are rapidly evolving before our eyes in many exciting ways. As a curious technologist, I am fascinated by these new trends, and I wrote this primer on the topic back in January: "ChatGPT: Hopes, Dreams, Cheating and Cybersecurity." I have received many questions about the use of ChatGPT to generate content, and this YouTube video addressed the question: "Is It Plagiarism to Use ChatGPT in Your Published Works?" But as an author, blogger and creator of original content, I have other concerns that are growing just as fast as the new technology is being deployed.

2022 in review: Regulation starts to catch up with AI in pharma - Pharmaceutical Technology
Artificial intelligence (AI) continued to stay in the news with several high-profile deals this year, as the pharmaceutical industry readily took to adopting AI models to improve drug discovery. But as the field grows in leaps and bounds, many authorities have prioritised the release of new guidelines, frameworks, and regulations to keep pace with these advances. AI applications such as ChatGPT, an Open AI chatbot that understands human speech and produces in-depth writing, have taken the world by storm and expanded the possibilities of using AI. Across all sectors, AI applications are being used to increase efficiency and reduce costs. This is true not only in the case of the general public using applications for creating images or text, but also for pharma companies to improve drug discovery, clinical trial recruitment, and finding new biomarkers.

Facebook scandal alarms China eyeing next frontier in artificial intelligence battle
London/Singapore:The scandal over the alleged abuse of Facebook Inc.'s user data is unfolding a long way from China, and yet privacy regulators in Beijing have been watching intently. Their interest shows how all three big players in the technology world--the Americans, Chinese and Europeans--are feeling their way to balance the demands of consumers for privacy and of governments for security. But they're also competing to shape the rules of the game for internet companies and, for the US and China in particular, to maximize access to data for a bigger goal: to dominate artificial intelligence, the next frontier in machine learning. "All of these governments and companies are in the middle of trying to figure out what data governance should look like," said Samm Sacks, senior fellow in the technology program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. "And this is happening in a global context that will have implications for trade and for research and development in AI." New Chinese privacy standards take effect on 1 May.
